The Thyroid Association of New Zealand Inc. is a patient-to-patient support group, started in July 2008. We became incorporated on 18 September 2009.
We are a voluntary organisation, whose founding members have been brought together because of suffering side effects of government funded medication and who wish to help others in similar situations.
We believe that every person has the right to be healthy and symptom-free and the right to a treatment plan that works for them. We feel it is time for the medical profession to amend the current protocol regarding the treatment of thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism.
We have first hand experience of inadequate treatment with Thyroxine (T4) only, as well as the inadequacy in diagnosing and dosing according to the TSH laboratory reference range. Because of adherence to this protocol, we continue to suffer symptoms that do not need to be tolerated.
Our experience and clinical presentation of the failure of thyroxine to relieve our symptoms has been continually dismissed or ignored by Doctors, who frequently attribute these symptoms to ‘psychosomatic’ or other ‘somatoform’ disorders.

The US manufacture of Natural Thyroid medication may be under threat. Mary Shomon is on the case and has started the Save Natural Thyroid Coalition.
